VisiCan Wi-Fi Module User & Configuration Manual

1. Overview & Operating Principle

The VisiCan Wi-Fi Module is designed to connect directly to the 6-pin expansion port on the back of your VisiCan display. It powers on automatically with vehicle ignition without requiring any manual intervention.

You can verify that the Wi-Fi module is operating actively by checking the real-time Date / Time line that updates every second on the bottom line of your VisiCan display:

  • Wi-Fi Icon: Indicates that the module is currently connected to an active wireless network. Hidden when disconnected.
  • Download / DataLog Icon: Indicates that active vehicle data logging to internal memory is running. Displays when active.

Hardware LED Indicators Meaning

The module plastic housing features two individual status windows with multi-color status LEDs:

  • Left Window (Power & System LED): Lights up Solid Green on initial boot. Once module firmware initializes, it begins cycling between White and Green.
  • Right Window (Communication & Activity LED):
    • Flashing Green: Active Wi-Fi connection successfully established.
    • Flashing Red: Live communication data packets being received from VisiCan display.
    • Flashing Blue: Active log line recorded to flash memory.
🕒 RTC & Supercapacitor Storage: Real-Time Clock (RTC) date/time settings synchronize over the internet via the RTC SYNC button. An internal supercapacitor retains date/time settings for 2–3 days while vehicle ignition is turned off. If unused for longer periods, the clock resets to default factory date (July 1, 2025).

2. Wi-Fi Wireless Connection Setup

The Wi-Fi module attempts to connect using a pre-configured connection hierarchy. If reset to factory settings or unable to reach saved networks, it checks available Wi-Fi networks in the following order:

The module always attempts to connect to the default hardcoded network VisiCan first. If unavailable, it sequentially tries stored Network #2 and Network #3 in memory.

  • Default Network Name (SSID): VisiCan
  • Default Password: VisiCan2025

First-Time Setup Steps:

  1. Enable Personal Hotspot / Access Point on your mobile phone or tablet.
  2. Set the Hotspot SSID to VisiCan and Password to VisiCan2025, then start internet sharing.
  3. Turn ON vehicle ignition. The module will start and automatically connect to your VisiCan hotspot.
📱 Important Note for Apple (iOS) Users: iOS does not allow changing hotspot names independently. You must change your overall iPhone name:
Go to Settings ➔ General ➔ About ➔ Name and rename your device to VisiCan.

Once connected via the VisiCan network, you can program up to 2 additional Wi-Fi networks (such as home/office Wi-Fi or personal hotspot) into module memory. The module will automatically connect to whichever saved network is accessible.

3. Web Interface Access

While your phone, tablet, or PC is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the module, open your web browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) and enter the following address into the URL bar:

Stopping DataLog (Critical Step)

To configure module settings, access VisiCan display options, or perform firmware updates, DataLog recording must be stopped first. Click the DataLog button on the web interface once to ensure it becomes inactive. Stopping DataLog activates all other setting controls.

Wi-Fi Profile Configuration (WiFi.1 / WiFi.2 SETTINGS)

Use WiFi.1 SETTINGS and WiFi.2 SETTINGS buttons to save credentials for 2 additional wireless networks:

  • WIFI-NAME: Enter network SSID in the top field.
  • WIFI-PASSWORD: Enter network password in the bottom field.
  • Click SAVE to store credentials into memory.

* NOTE: Network SSIDs and passwords must not contain special characters or non-English symbols.

Real-Time Clock Sync (RTC SYNC)

Click RTC SYNC while connected to an active internet hotspot to pull time server data (takes 2–3 seconds). Click HOME to return to the main dashboard once verified. Repeat if time server response drops.

Memory Management

The Wi-Fi module performs cyclical logging; it creates a new file upon every ignition start and automatically purges old files when storage fills up. Manual options include:

  • CLEAR LOGS: Deletes all stored vehicle log files at once to free up storage space.
  • CLEAR FLASH !!!: Performs a full wipe of all saved files, settings, and updates. Do not click unless explicitly instructed by support!

5. Over-The-Air (OTA) Module Firmware Updates

Wi-Fi modules can update their internal firmware over the internet (OTA). Prerequisites before updating:

  1. Active internet connection on the Wi-Fi module.
  2. DataLog feature stopped.
  3. Time synchronized via RTC SYNC.
  4. Memory cleared via CLEAR LOGS.

Click FIRMWARE UPDATE (OTA) to trigger the update command. Progress displays on the bottom line of the VisiCan screen (e.g., W.UPD ... 124). The process takes 3–5 minutes.

Post-Update Steps & Web UI Flashing:

  • Once firmware flashing completes, close your browser tab and turn off personal hotspot. Turn off vehicle ignition for 1–2 minutes, then restart.
  • If a plain white page with minimal controls appears after reboot, reconnect internet and click UI UPDATE (OTA) to download user interface files (takes 30–45 seconds).
  • Closing browser tabs before triggering UI updates prevents background page refreshes. Using Google Chrome is recommended for update steps.

6. Modifying VisiCan Display Settings

Clicking VISICAN SETTINGS prompts the module to read configuration from the gauge memory and display parameters compatible with your specific VisiCan generation (4th Gen or 5th Gen) and engine software type (Diesel/Petrol).

  • The top section mirrors the primary VisiCan gauge layout; clicking any metric opens a selection menu to customize the grid.
  • The middle section configures the 4 metrics displayed on the circular gauge page.
  • Bottom options control Auto-Brightness, Night/Day thresholding, and communication setup. External Datalogging must be set to "2" when using the Wi-Fi module.

7. Flashing VisiCan Gauge Firmware via Wi-Fi Module (Programmer Mode)

The Wi-Fi module programmer feature allows updating main gauge firmware binaries (.hex) and custom startup logos on 4th and 5th Gen VisiCan displays.

Prerequisites:

  1. DataLog feature stopped.
  2. Storage cleared via CLEAR LOGS.
  3. Target firmware binary (.hex) saved on your device with a short name without special characters.

Flashing Steps:

  1. Open FILE UPLOAD on the web interface, click CHOOSE FILE to select the binary file, and click UPLOAD (Progress displays as Progress: ..%).
  2. Once Upload Completed appears, return to the Home page using the BACK button. Confirm the file is listed.
  3. Click Programmer on the home page to arm flasher mode.
  4. Putting Display into Programming Mode: On VisiCan displays with 2024+ firmware, perform a Soft Reset by pressing and holding Buttons #1 & #2 for 2 seconds while running. Alternatively, hold Button #1 while turning ON ignition.
  5. When the gauge enters bootloader mode, status updates to 5.Gen VisiCan PROGRAMMING MODE. Refreshing the page reveals ➔ FIRMWARE or ➔ LOGO HD action buttons next to the uploaded file.
  6. Click the corresponding flash button. Flashing takes 5–7 minutes. The VisiCan gauge will automatically reboot upon successful completion.

Troubleshooting: If flashing halts for over 8–10 minutes: Turn OFF vehicle ignition (or disconnect OBD connector). Hold Button #1 on the VisiCan display while turning ignition back ON, then click ➔ FIRMWARE on the web interface to restart the flashing process.
